Building Customer Personas That Are Actually Useful
Working out who buys from you and why, using what you already know rather than what a template asks for.
Understanding Customer Personas
A customer persona is a semi-fictional representation of your ideal customer based on research and data. It helps you understand who you're selling to, what they need, and how to reach them effectively.
For South African SMEs, personas are especially valuable because our market is diverse - what works in Sandton doesn't work in Soweto, and what appeals to a corporate buyer differs completely from a spaza shop owner.
- Better Marketing: Speak directly to customer needs and pain points
- Improved Products: Develop offerings customers actually want
- Efficient Spending: Target the right people, waste less on ads
- Consistent Messaging: Everyone in your team understands the customer
- Higher Conversion: Messages that resonate convert better

SA-Specific Persona Considerations
South Africa's diversity means personas must account for unique local factors:
Economic Segments
South Africa uses LSM 1-10 to segment markets:
- LSM 1-4: Lower income, township/rural, price-sensitive, cash-based
- LSM 5-7: Middle income, aspirational, value-conscious
- LSM 8-10: Higher income, quality-focused, brand-conscious
Your persona should clearly fall into an LSM bracket.
Geographic Considerations
Urban vs RuralRequired
Access to internet, banking, logistics differs dramatically.
ProvinceRequired
Economic activity, language, and culture vary by province.
Township vs SuburbOptional
Different shopping behaviors, payment preferences, media consumption.

- Facebook: 26 million users - broad reach
- Instagram: 12 million users - younger, urban
- LinkedIn: 9.5 million - professionals, B2B
- TikTok: 11 million - younger demographics
- Data Costs: Factor in data affordability for your target market
Creating Your Persona
Step-by-Step Process
Gather Existing Data
Look at your current customers. Who buys from you? What do they have in common? Check sales records, CRM data, social media followers.
Interview Customers
Talk to 5-10 of your best customers. Ask about their challenges, how they found you, why they chose you. Record insights.
Survey Broader Audience
Use WhatsApp, email, or social media to survey potential customers. Free tools like Google Forms work well.
Analyze Competitors
Who are your competitors targeting? Look at their marketing, reviews, social media followers.
Identify Patterns
Group similar customers together. Look for common demographics, challenges, and behaviors.
Write the Persona
Create a detailed profile. Give them a name, face, and story.
Validate & Refine
Test your persona with real marketing. Refine based on what works.

- Set and Forget: Review and update personas annually.
- Everyone is a Customer: If everyone is your target, no one is.
