Understanding Markup vs Margin
Markup
Percentage added to cost to get selling price.
Markup % = ((Price - Cost) / Cost) × 100
Example: R100 cost with 50% markup = R150 selling price
Margin
Percentage of selling price that is profit.
Margin % = ((Price - Cost) / Price) × 100
Example: R150 price with R100 cost = 33.33% margin
Note: A 50% markup is NOT the same as a 50% margin. A 50% markup equals approximately 33.33% margin. Use this calculator to avoid pricing errors.
